On the morning of September 9, my daughter and I spent about two hours walking on the first section of the trail.  It started out a warm and humid 77 degrees and quickly warmed up to 90 degrees.  Gnats were present in several areas.  This is the first time in a year and a half that we have encountered annoying insects.

Birding was on the quiet side.  In a few areas, there were some warblers in the treetops, but they were much too high to identify.  We did see and hear a number of Blue Jays and heard a lingering cuckoo.  We also saw and/or heard a Carolina Wren, several Titmice, a White-breasted Nuthatch, several Pine Warblers, a couple of chickadees and two Pileated Woodpeckers.

We saw hog and deer tracks and fox scat.  There were a few wildflowers in bloom and we saw several species of butterflies;  i.e., Sleepy Orange, Sulphurs, Red-spotted Purples and Gulf Fritillary.  There was a Fox Squirrel at the Visitors Center.  This is always a delight to see.
