Under the leadership of Frances Chavous, Salkehatchie Stew is dedicated to uniting Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Hampton and Colleton counties through music, drama and storytelling.

This unique group records oral histories, presents storytelling workshops and delights visitors with an annual theatrical production based on local stories that combine to form a dramatic narrative.

The Brew includes entertaining storytelling for all ages featuring regional storytellers Millie Chaplin and Tom Cuny and headliner Donna Washington.

Visitors can browse displays of collections of all kinds and hear collectors' stories, compete in a tall tale telling contest, savor delectable food, see and hear historical remembrances of Bamberg County, and view "Displaced"--a documentary film telling the stories of people and communities who were displaced when the Savannah River Site was built.

Bamberg will also sponsor a heritage tour of Southern gardens and porches on April 17.

Salkehatchie Stew continues to collect audio recordings of local stories, creating an archive that offers insight into the rich culture of the region.

Production dates are
April 16-18 in Allendale at the B&G Civic Center,
April 23-25 at the Dane Theater in Denmark,
April 30 & May 1 in Hampton at the Palmetto Theater, and
May 2 in Estill at the Estill School District Auditorium.

Performance times in all theaters are Friday evenings at 7:30 and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 3:00.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children 3-12. 


Groups of 15 or more may have a reduced rate if purchased in advance.
A BBQ meal will be offered at the B&G Civic Center before the three Allendale performances. Tickets will be available in advance.

Sherman crossed the Savannah River in early February, 1865, cutting a 30- mile path of destruction. This informative museum shares the rich history of Aiken, Bamberg, Barnwell and Orangeburg counties and features interactive displays depicting the beautiful countryside and exploring the region's history. Exhibits focus on the early phase of Gen. Sherman's Civil War campaign through the Carolinas and the important role trains have played in the Salkehatchie history.
