Birders can enjoy one of America's leading birding areas in Salkehatchie. With a number of Important Birding Areas as well as rare resident and migratory bird species, the Salkehatchie is heaven on earth for birders. Whether you're interested in a quick birding daytrip or a weekend excursion, bring your field guide and your binoculars and keep your eyes and ears open!

In the spring and summer months, birders can see wood storks, black-bellied whistling ducks, painted buntings, swallow-tail kites and yellow-throated warblers. During migration season in the fall, a variety of shore birds come through the area. In the winter, migrating water fowl and bald eagles can be observed in abundance.

Start your birding excursion at Bear Island Wildlife Management Area in Green Pond, S.C., which is widely considered to be one of the best birding destinations in the Palmetto State. Keep an eye out for the Black-bellied Whistling-Duck, Barn Owls, Roseate Spoonbills and other exotic species.

Then, visit the nearby Donnelly Wildlife Management Area in Green Pond, an Audubon Important Bird Area with a variety of species inhabiting wetland and upland habitats, from managed rice fields to upland forests.

Finally, check out the Webb Wildlife Center Garnett to explore 5,800 acres of bird habitat. The 2.1-mile Savannah River Trail winds through old growth stands of bald cypress and water tupelo, ending up at the stunning Savannah River. Keep an eye out for Swallow-tailed Kites, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Acadian Flycatchers, Yellow-Throated Warblers and many other species.
